Noises in the roof and walls

Noises in the roof and walls

Noises in the attic and walls at night? Do you think you are imagining them or are they very real and loud? They are a bit unnerving aren’t they, but noises in the walls and roof are a very common pest problem at this time of year.

The commonest causes of noises in the wall and roof are mice and rats in autumn, winter and spring. This is because they need to get inside buildings for shelter from the bad weather. Mice are a particular problem because they can get inside through gaps as small as 6mm, as well as dig down under a house wall or climb up to the house roof. Rats are a lot larger than mice but even then rats can get in to buildings through gaps as small as 20mm and they often make rat burrows under house walls.

You will hear noises in the roof and walls at night especially because rodent vermin, rats and mice are nocturnal normally, sleeping in the day and running around looking for food when it is dark. That doesn’t mean to say that noises happen at night only though – hungry rodent vermin looking for food will move around in the day as well as the night.

Mouse infestations and rat infestations in buildings and houses develop after the rodent vermin get inside. Rats and mice infest a property by climbing up and down inside walls, under floors and across ceilings and in attics, making those tell-tale noises in the roof and walls, and even noises under the floor, as they move around.

Do not ignore noises in the walls and attic or under the floor.  A rat infestation or mouse infestation in a house is dangerous and unhealthy because the vermin chew electric wires and water pipes, as well leaving droppings and urine in kitchens and cupboards and on floors.  See what rodent vermin damage rats in Kirkcaldy caused!
