What do moths eat and do moths eat clothes?

Yes, moths eat clothes unfortunately!  Moths eating clothes is done by moth larvae. Moth larvae need to eat animal protein to grow but because they have only very soft mouth-parts, and so can eat only soft animal protein, they chomp away at delicate fibres of wool, fur and feathers.  They can do a lot of damage: we found a pair of sheepskin slippers stripped completely of wool inside doing moth pest control in Perth, cashmere jumpers full of holes needed moth pest control in Pitlochry, moth pest control In Dundee sorted out threadbare, moth-eaten woollen carpets and we have done moth pest control in Dunfermline for antique furs being attacked by moths. We have solved a long-standing moth problem in a very large house using moth pest control in Fife. Moth pest control in Edinburgh got rid of moths from clothing and furniture before moving house and a wardrobe full of moths was made moth-free with moth pest control in Kinross.

How long do moths live? - The moth life-cycle (Tineola bisselliella)

An adult moth does not feed and can live only up to a month, but actually carpet moths and clothes moths have 4 life-stages. An adult moth lays moth eggs that hatch after 1-2 weeks to moth larvae. Moth larvae are the ones that cause moth damage and, unfortunately, these can live for up to 2 years, depending on temperature and the quality of food they eat. Eventually they crawl away and hide in inaccessible areas and turn in to moth pupae that will produce adult carpet moths and clothes moths 2 weeks - 2 months later. To top it all, the adult moths do not fly much but, instead, stay mostly hidden and scuttle around on the floor, under furniture and beds and in clothes and bedding. It all adds up to a long life-cycle with 4 different life-stages needing moth pest control, some of them hidden away and some hard to see.  This is why moths in house can be difficult to get rid of.

How to get rid of moths

Clothes moths and carpet moths have a long life-cycle, up to 2+ years possibly, with 4 different life-stages needing moth pest control, some of them hidden away.  This is why a moth infestation can be difficult to get rid of.

There is no half-measure to get rid of moths: spot treatments using amateur use moth pest control and moth killer products, combined with poor or misleading information from sellers of the products (especially on the internet) can lead to a moth infestation not being controlled and becoming widespread and well-established in a property. It is important to know just how widespread the moths are too: treating only one problem spot when there are moths in other places will just lead to a cycle of repeated moth infestations.
