There’s more information below as well about our bird control and bird proofing, bird removal and bird waste clearance.

How legislation affects bird control and bird proofing
All birds and their nests, eggs and young are protected by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. However, some birds are classed legally as Pest Birds because they use our buildings for shelter, scavenge for food, eat crops and cause danger at airports, gather in groups to nest and feed, are noisy and aggressive, carry disease and insect infestations, produce filth and debris that damage buildings and are a risk to public health and safety. It is legal to carry out pest bird control in Scotland; some examples of pest birds are Carrion Crow, Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Rook, Feral Pigeon, Wood Pigeon. The law is very specific though on when, in what setting and how pest birds can be controlled. The law changes yearly so what was legal one year could be illegal the next; the laws vary across the UK too. Also, Special Licences for bird control and very often needed now.

Always get professional pest control advice when it comes to bird control and bird proofing, otherwise you could end up in court for committing Wildlife Crime.

Health risks associated with birds
Diseases that cause illness and death in man are carried by pest pigeons especially. Respiratory diseases like Psittacosis and Avian ‘flu. Severe food poisoning and body infections from Salmonella and E. coli. Bird Fleas, Bird Mites and Martin Bugs are blood sucking insects that live on birds and in the nests; they move into buildings and feed on human blood. Beetles, Flies and Moths breed in pigeon mess and nests and then infest buildings and contaminate food. Blowflies breed in dead birds and the flies infest buildings, looking for food to lay eggs in.

Some bird control and bird proofing problems in East Scotland that we’ve dealt with:
Desperate house sellers asked for bird control in Perth to control nuisance crow behaviour that was putting off potential buyers. We’ve used bird control in Pitlochry as well to control crows attacking squirrel feeders and windows. Crows and jackdaws nest in chimneys and we’ve cleared nests and installed bird proofing for this bird control in Kinross.

Herring gulls nesting on the roofs of industrial units needed bird control in St Andrews; we used pest bird control in Dundee to clear these aggressive gulls that were attacking customers at a retail store; and we stopped gulls from messing on cars outside a showroom by gull proofing and bird control in Glenrothes.

Pest pigeons roosting on balconies needed bird proofing to control the bird problem in Auchterarder. We cleared hundreds of pest pigeons from inside a semi-derelict building using bird control in Glenrothes. A historic monument needed bird control in Forfar for pest pigeons too, followed by clearance of bird waste that was waist high. Pest pigeons are a plague for shops as well; we’ve used bird control and bird proofing in Cupar to stop them soiling shop signs, frontages and fire escapes. We’ve found the Bird Free optical gel works very well in getting rid of pest pigeons.

Small birds like sparrows and starlings cause problems too. We’ve used bird control and proofing in Kinross for houses infested with moths from sparrows’ nests under the house eaves, and bird control and proofing in Arbroath for the same problem caused by starlings’ nests inside the dormer eaves. Swallows and house martins cause bird control problems as well, with lots of mess falling from their mud nests onto doors and windows and the ground below. It’s a widespread problem and we’ve successfully installed bird proofing to control this bird problem across the east of Scotland.

And we’ve been called out to catch birds stuck in buildings so they don’t cause a mess and set off the alarms. We used this bird control in Cupar at 6pm one Saturday; the staff were as glad to be out of the shop as the pigeon was.

Some bird control methods
Bird Gel; a new product available from experts in bird control. Bird proofing using bird netting, bird spiking, bird wire and bird mesh. Physical deterrents like daddy longlegs & prickle strips. The Avishock electrical deterrent system. Sound and sight deterrents, hawking, kites, decoy deterrents. Nesting interference using egg oiling and replacement and nest disturbance. Removal by cage trapping, landing nets and shooting. Solar panel bird-proofing. Laser deterrence and control of birds.

Solar panel bird-proofing
Pigeons are the birds most commonly found living under solar panels because it is a lovely, safe roosting and nesting area for them, protected from predators and the weather. Pigeon mess accumulates quickly under solar panels and can damage the roof and gutters. And just a couple of birds can increase to many more even within a year, making the problem worse. Our solar panel bird proofing is designed specifically for solar panels: a professional solution to stop birds nesting under solar panels permanently. We get rid of birds at the solar panels too and this is done humanely and legally and according to Animal Welfare. We clean out birds’ mess from gutters and solar panels too. And we’ve got the experience to install the solar panel bird proofing safely so the panels aren’t damaged.
