Flying ant control in Perth

flying antsSwarms of flying ants in Perth and Kinross have been causing problems all through the county in the past couple of weeks. Flying Ants are the sexually mature forms of the Garden Ant or Black Ant, which is very common in Scotland. These ants cause a lot of problems by invading kitchens and houses and infesting patios. Then, when the weather turns warm, humid and thundery in July and August they cause even more problems by developing wings and flying. You’ll see masses of what look like large and small flies but they’re actually ants with wings; the large ones are female, the smaller ones are male and they fly in a swarm so they can mate. A swarm of ants is pretty alarming because there are hundreds of ants in a flying frenzy, and they can appear inside as well as outside.

We had an emergency call-out in Perth to a full blown ant swarm in a kitchen, which is a bit horrid. It turned out that ants had been seen on the kitchen units on and off all summer.  And we found a patio at Pitlochry absolutely covered by a swarm. It’s a bit of a pity that just when the summer turns hot, with temperatures over 20°C, and we’re out in our gardens enjoying it, that flying ants come along and spoil it.

You can get chemical, insecticidal treatments for ants and flying ants, inside and outside. But be careful – always get a professional, qualified pest control company in to do the treatment because the insecticides can be harmful to children, pets and wildlife if they’re not used properly. We’re nationally accredited members of the UK trade body, the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) so you can be sure that we know what we’re doing. Be safe; check out who you’re hiring and look for the BPCA logo.
