Just Got Back from Your Summer Holiday? What Did You Bring Back with You?

As the summer holidays come to an end (seemingly faster than ever), many people will be returning from a week or two abroad. Others will have ventured out to holiday accommodation in the UK, and everyone will now be turning their attention to getting the kids back to school and into the normal routine.

But for some, their attention will turn to something altogether more alarming. Bedbugs.

While these can crop up throughout the year, this is a peak season for them. That’s simply because lots of people have gone to stay in hotels, B&Bs, and other accommodation on holiday. While most holiday properties are clean and safe, some may be substandard – and if there are bedbugs around, it is very easy to bring them home without realising.

How do you know if you have a bedbug infestation?

The first thing to do is to check your bed. Check the bottom sheet and other bedding for tiny dark spots. It’s horrible to think about it, but this can be a sign of bedbug excrement. You might also spot tiny shells that have been shed by the bedbugs as they go through a growth phase.

You’ll probably feel itchy, too. However, this doesn’t always apply. Not everyone is affected by the bites, and those that are might take them to be a bite from something else. That’s why the best bet in identifying bedbug infestations is to look in the bed itself.

Don’t forget to look around the crevices of the bed, such as where the mattress sits in the frame. This is where you might spot small white eggs, as the lifecycle of the bedbug continues.

If you did bring them back from holiday, there’s a chance your suitcases might bear signs of them, too – not to mention any clothes that were in there. As such, it is usually best to call in the experts to get rid of the infestation. The natural reaction of many people would be to strip the bed and wash everything. But in doing so, this can easily transfer the bedbugs and eggs onto the carpets… and onto everything else between the bed and the washing machine.

So, by enlisting the help of the professionals, you can ensure not only your bed is cleaned of all bedbugs, but everything else as well.
